Grappling and BJJ share positions, control, escapes and submissions. The practical differences usually concern clothing, rules and the emphasis of each class rather than one being “better”.

What does grappling mean?

Grappling is a broad term for close-range fighting without strikes. It includes takedowns, control and submissions. It is often trained without a gi, using a rash guard and shorts.

What is BJJ?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu focuses strongly on ground fighting. It may be practised with a gi, using grips on the fabric, or without one. Rules and scoring vary between competitions.

Which transfers best to MMA?

MMA requires takedowns, control without relying on clothing, the ability to stand up and submissions while accounting for strikes. No-gi grappling therefore transfers directly, although a strong BJJ base is also extremely useful.

Can I begin without experience?

Yes. You first learn how to fall, move, breathe under pressure and recognise the main positions. Technique and consistency matter more than exceptional strength or flexibility.

At La Forja: Grappling Basics runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 20:00, alongside the general classes.

How should I choose?

If you want no-gi training, positional defence and a clear connection with MMA, try grappling. A trial class will show you the coaching style and atmosphere.
