There is no perfect age for every child. Maturity, the ability to follow simple instructions and a class designed for their stage of development matter more.

Signs that a child may be ready

  • They can focus for short periods and return to the task after distraction.
  • They understand basic rules such as waiting and stopping when the coach asks.
  • They are curious and accept working with other children.
  • They can explain if something hurts or feels uncomfortable.

The age must match the group

An adult class should not simply be made “easier” for children. Explanations, exercise length, challenges and ways of maintaining attention all need to change. La Forja’s Kickboxing Kids programme is designed for ages 8 to 13.

Do martial arts make children aggressive?

A well-run programme teaches the opposite: control, respect for partners and responsibility. Technique must always come with clear rules about when and how it is used.

What should families ask?

Ask how contact is controlled, whether experience is needed, what equipment to buy and how the coach supports a nervous child.

Free trial class: meet the Kickboxing Kids group on Tuesday or Thursday from 17:00 to 18:00 before deciding.

The most useful test

Let your child try one session and speak with the coach afterwards. The first goal is not perfect technique; it is feeling safe, respecting the rules and wanting to continue learning.
